Vector Faculty Member

Overview

The Vector Institute invites Faculty Member applications from all areas of artificial intelligence, with preference given to both deep learning and machine learning researchers more broadly as well as to researchers who are applying machine learning techniques in disciplines such as science and engineering and in domains such as health and business.

The Vector Institute is seeking Faculty Members to join our growing team in Toronto. This appointment is open only to qualified individuals who self-identify as women, transgender, non-binary, or two-spirit. Applicants must complete a Self-Identification Form  and submit it with their application materials. Vector recognizes that candidates may self-identify in more than one equity-seeking group and encourages applications from candidates who also identify as Indigenous persons, persons with a disability, racialized persons, or persons of a minority sexual orientation.

Vector Institute’s 2020-23 Three-year Strategic Plan includes working in collaboration with our partners to continue to attract and retain deep learning and machine learning researchers of the highest calibre in both curiosity-driven and applied research. As CIFAR’s Pan-Canadian AI Strategy further affirms our commitment to attract and retain top research talent, Vector Faculty Members may also be nominated to be a Canada CIFAR AI Chair by the Vector Institute.

The Vector Institute strives for greater inclusion in the programs and culture that we build and in the broader AI ecosystem we support. As part of our commitment to diversity, Vector is a proud supporter of the Government of Canada’s 50 – 30 Challenge to increase the representation and inclusion of diverse groups within the Institute.  This particular selection process follows the provisions for a special program as described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission in order to address the underrepresentation of women and gender diverse individuals in AI. Improving the representation, participation and engagement of equity-deserving groups within our community is a key objective of Vector.

Faculty Members are evaluated and selected based on their:

  • Excellence in research at the highest international level, indicated by high-impact publications and research awards/honours.
  • Active academic research program. Vector invites applicants from researchers focused on all areas of AI. Vector is recognized internationally for its fundamental research in machine learning and deep learning and continues to prioritize this area. It aims to build on its strength in health and life science AI research and in trustworthy AI, as well as develop capacity in new strategic priority areas including AI for science and foundation models.
  • Potential for future impact and strategic importance of application areas in the strategic research priorities described above and the extent to which their research and expertise will strengthen and support the vision and mission of the Vector Institute.
  • Potential for engagement with industry sponsor companies and partner organizations.

Please note that to be eligible for a Faculty Member position at the Vector Institute, you must hold an academic appointment at a Canadian university at the time your application is under review.

The recruitment process is highly competitive. While Vector is appreciative of the interest all applicants demonstrate in joining our organization, Vector only contacts candidates that have been shortlisted by Vector’s hiring committee to advance further in the recruitment process.

In general, the successful applicant will receive an annual stipend, as well as a funding package that is tailored to meet the Faculty Member’s individual needs. Funding packages may include start-up funding for early career faculty, research grants for students and postdoctoral fellows, and a travel allowance. Vector Faculty Members also receive access to state-of-the-art computing arrangements, equipment, operational support as well as access to machine learning specialists to collaborate on design, architecture, best practices, and engineering support for research collaborations.
