RESEARCH SCIENTIST POSITIONS IN THE FIELD OF DEEP LEARNING AND MACHINE LEARNING

The newly-formed Vector Institute for artificial intelligence in Toronto, Canada is seeking applications for a number of Research Scientist openings at all ranks in areas related to machine learning and deep learning and their applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Research Scientist’s primary appointment will be in the Institute; appropriately qualified candidates will be eligible for a faculty appointment at an affiliated university. The appointed candidate will collaborate with other members of the Institute, supervise graduate students, engage in state-of-the-art research, publish at the highest international level, and contribute to the academic life and reputation of the Institute.

These candidates will also take leadership roles in determining strategic areas of research. They will be encouraged to develop entrepreneurial activities, and interact with industry. The candidate will be involved in mentoring and teaching at summer schools offered by the Institute, and will have the opportunity to teach graduate and undergraduate courses at a university if they wish to do so.

FEATURES
The appointed candidate will have the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial activities and work with existing companies. The Institute will have staff dedicated to facilitating all aspects of industrial activities, including consulting, collaboration, and the development of new start-ups. The candidate can benefit from the Institute’s internationally connected network of incubators and accelerators in the area.

The Institute will have extensive computing resources available and access to datasets for the research faculty. The Institute will employ a team of professional software engineers who will help improve research productivity through software platform development, ensuring research reproducibility, publishing open source code and data, and in readying code for commercial use.

Appointed candidates will be expected to supervise graduate students, who will be fully funded through the Institute and external sources.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
We are looking for people with interests across a broad spectrum, from core machine learning or deep learning research to more applied and entrepreneurial activities. We envision at least three types of successful applicants:
1. A machine/deep learning researcher who wants to form a research group, with students and postdocs, with limited teaching or grant-writing responsibilities
2. A machine/deep learning researcher who would like to explore opportunities to be involved in an early-stage company, or start one of her or his own
3. A machine/deep learning researcher who wants to work closely with industry, on real-world datasets and problems

REQUIREMENTS
• Ph.D. in Computer Science or in a related field • An excellent publication record in deep learning, or in machine learning more broadly with primary author articles in high-impact conferences and journals
• Expertise in a core area of machine learning, including but not limited to deep, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, optimization, and theory; and/or one or more areas related to applied machine learning, including but not limited to natural language, health, vision, robotics, medicine, biology, transportation, media and finance
• Experience in working with industry or in a start-up environment is considered an asset
• Supervisory experience is considered an asset THE VECTOR INSTITUTE
• The Vector Institute for artificial intelligence is a newly-formed research institute in Toronto, located in the MaRS Discovery District, supported with funding from the provincial and federal governments as well as Canadian industry.
• The Institute’s mission is to be a world-leading center for machine learning research and applications. We aim to push the research into new domains and scientific discoveries. We also want to foster new applications, successful start-ups, and scale-ups. A primary aim is to graduate more AI talent, in response to the demand from industry in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada in general.
