Gillian K. Hadfield is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of AI Alignment and Governance at the School of Government and Policy and the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University. She is a faculty member of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Senior Fellow. Hadfield’s research focuses on innovative design for legal, regulatory, and technical systems for AI, computational models of human normative systems, and building AI systems that understand and respond to human values and norms.
Hadfield believes normativity — the practice of classifying behaviors as acceptable or unacceptable and coordinating third-party enforcement to channel behavior accordingly — is at the root of everything that distinguishes humans from our primate ancestors. Her current work addresses AI governance and alignment through computational models of normativity and legal order, with the goal of building AI systems that can integrate into human normative systems and support human flourishing.
