DaRMoD

Vector’s Data Readiness, Model Development, and Model Deployment (DaRMoD) program guides startups and small businesses from an AI idea to prototype in four months, building the internal capability to own and sustain what they deliver.

Have an AI idea? Build it.

DaRMoD walks participants through the end-to-end machine learning lifecycle. By the end of the program, you’ll have:

A validated prototype

Built on your own use case, with responsible AI design thinking applied from ideation through to deployment, demonstrating technical feasibility and real business value.

A stronger internal team

Your team will gain the skills to maintain, iterate on, and extend what they have built. The capability stays with your company when the program ends.

A Showcase Day presentation

An opportunity to present your work to peers, practitioners, and potential partners in a low-stakes environment to sharpen how you communicate your solution.

Access to what comes next

Lay the groundwork to participate in deeper AI engagements, like talent programs, bootcamps, and collaborative research opportunities.

“DaRMoD offers a great balance of fundamental concepts and applied learning. The emphasis on a core business case and product development helped us focus on building something meaningful for our company. We are already applying what we learned across our business and will continue leveraging this knowledge to develop innovative products.”

Cameron Dallas

CTO of Mazlite Inc

The DarMoD online course was both enlightening and empowering, attributed to the deep knowledge of the teaching team who expertly balance technicality with applicability in the startup context. The unique setup of learning along with other founders boosted collaboration and facilitated fresh insights.

Program structure

The program runs over approximately four months, structured across three learning phases and a final Showcase Day. Sessions are virtual and include a mix of lectures, hands-on demos, discussions, and 1-on-1 meetings with a Technical Advisor.

Data Readiness

Define your problem, set success metrics, and assess your data readiness before model development begins.

Model development

Explore and evaluate ML approaches based on your use case, available data, and compute resources. Use performance metrics to iterate and improve your model.

Model deployment

Develop a deployment strategy that accounts for latency, resource use, and scalability. Consider how your solution gets rolled out and integrated into existing business operations.

Program details

Program eligibility

  • Startup or small business (1–499 employees), incorporated and operating in Canada.
  • A defined AI use case you are ready to develop during the program
  • Available data, or a plan to collect it.
  • At least one technical team member who can actively participate in hands-on sessions and apply learnings to the prototype.
  • Priority consideration is given to southern Ontario-based companies in the energy, mobility, manufacturing, and biotech sectors. Other locations and sectors are encouraged to apply.

DaRMoD is delivered through Vector’s FastLane program for Canadian startups and small businesses adopting AI. Participation in DaRMoD requires acceptance into FastLane and continued eligibility throughout.

Program benefits

  • Immediate impact – Everything you learn gets applied directly to your company’s use case.
  • Fractional ML expertise – Weekly 1-on-1 office hours with experienced ML practitioners give your team access to guidance that would otherwise require an expensive consultant or senior hire.
  • Structured momentum – The program timeline acts as a development sprint and creates accountability.
  • Community – Learn alongside founders and technical leads from other startups and small businesses working through similar challenges. Selected companies are also invited to participate in programs, events, and networking opportunities hosted by Vector and its partners.

Time commitment

The program requires approximately 5 to 6 hours per week, including two group educational sessions of 1.5 to 2 hours each, a 30-minute Technical Advisor call, and roughly 30 to 60 minutes of preparation. Time spent on prototype development outside of sessions varies by company and use case.

Program cost

This program is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and offered at no cost to eligible companies.
