Today, the Vector Institute announced the Responsible AI Product Development Playbook, designed to help professionals navigate the complexities of AI product development. The playbook is ideal for entrepreneurs, product managers, designers, tech leads, and domain experts. It contains guidance, examples, and tips to help companies navigate the path to responsible AI product development.

It was inspired by Vector’s experiences collaborating and building AI products with partners. While many product teams recognize the importance of responsible AI, they often lack the internal expertise.

What’s inside the Playbook

The playbook has five stages that cover the product development process:

  1. Ideation – Should you use AI?
  2. Development – How do you build something with AI?
  3. Testing – How do you know if your AI works?
  4. Deployment – How do you safely launch your AI?
  5. Post-Deployment – What do you do once people start using your AI?

Why responsible AI matters

Vector is committed to developing responsible AI. The Playbook puts principles into action, connecting Vector’s high-level AI Trust and Safety Principles with practical tools like UnBIAS and CyclOps which address challenges like fairness and evaluation.

The Playbook is a resource to ensure that the people, infrastructure, time, money, and energy invested into AI development work towards improving people’s lives. It was created in the hope that it would not only lead to safe, trustworthy, and ethical AI development, but also as a prime resource  for building a culture around human-centred AI within organizations.
