The Vector Institute and the National AI Research Lab (NAIRL) of South Korea have announced a new strategic partnership to accelerate frontier artificial intelligence research, opening new pathways for researcher exchange, joint projects, and knowledge-sharing between two of the world’s leading AI research institutions.

The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony in Seoul on July 5, 2026, at the RIKEN-Vector-NAIRL Workshop, a trilateral gathering that brought together leading AI researchers from Canada, South Korea, and Japan. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by Pascal Poupart, Research Director at the Vector Institute and Kee-Eung Kim, Director of NAIRL. The workshop itself reflects Vector’s existing research partnerships with both NAIRL and RIKEN, Japan’s largest comprehensive research institution, with which Vector also holds a formal MOU. By convening researchers from all three institutions, it actualises a shared commitment to knowledge diplomacy: the principle that the most consequential advances in AI depend on the free flow of ideas across borders.

“NAIRL brings exceptional depth in core AI models and this partnership creates a direct corridor for our communities to share insights and talent. Our goal is to build a collaborative ecosystem where breakthroughs in one lab can immediately inspire progress in the other, accelerating discovery for the entire field.”

This partnership unites two institutions with a shared philosophy: that rigorous, independent research, and a commitment to cultivating the next generation of AI talent are essential to responsible AI advancement. As NAIRL works to connect South Korea’s vibrant AI community to the global frontier, its mission naturally aligns with Vector’s role as a hub for machine learning and deep learning excellence.

The Vector-NAIRL partnership also reflects a broader moment in Canada-Korea relations. In Jan. 2026, the governments of Canada and the Republic of Korea deepened their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, identifying artificial intelligence as one of the key sectors for expanded bilateral cooperation. The Vector-NAIRL MOU provides a concrete research dimension to that national commitment, connecting the researchers who are building the AI ecosystems in both countries.

This trilateral cooperation between Canadian, Korean, and Japanese researchers underscores the increasingly multilateral character of frontier AI. The Vector-NAIRL partnership is a meaningful step toward building a more integrated global research network, enabling researchers to jointly tackle the field’s most consequential open problems.
